The Origins of Cal Fummles

The background to the Name   CAL FUMMELS:-

The “Cal” part is fairly straight forward to understand for anyone who has stayed or visited the Northeast of Scotland. It’s simply an abbreviation of the word cold and it’s pronounced KAL .

The “Fummels” bit is a bit more complicated! You have to delve back into the ancient “Doric” language of the Buchan area of Scotland for an answer.

In the lyrics of the songs that were written and sung by local farm workers (Cornkysters) the first references to the word “Hummels” can be found.

“Pit on yer Hummel Doddy’s loon tae hap yer muckel thooms” taken from (Miginty’s meal an Ale, faun the pig gid on the spree). Due to a typo by yours truly 29 years ago the H was typed in as an F!

Hummel Doodys is a reference to fingerless gloves that were worn by dairymen at the time, allowing them to milk the cows but keep the rest of their hands warm and maintain the feeling in them.

With Golf being a “feel & touch” sport we thought this would be an appropriate title for  the competition.

So there you have it simple as that! Two tchooters fae Turra (Philip & Roddy) started the Cal Fummels but wanted to carry on the traditional values of their heritage hence: - “Cal Fummels Winter Golf League”. The typo mistake quite possibly saved them from any copyright issues or law suits.
